Till a few years ago, it was impossible to string a sentence with the words Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), shopping and art. All that there was were tall, swanky office buildings. But now, the space has reinvented itself. We wander past the Jio World Drive in BKC, where we see large scale art installations spread across the floors, restaurants such as Cou Cou, Someplace Else and The Nutcracker, and high-end brands such as Calvin Klein, Emporio Armani, Kama Ayurveda, Onitsuka Tiger, Muji and more.
Just over a decade ago, BKC was not seen as anything more than a business hub. There was the occasional visit to Yauatcha, the Chinese dim sum teahouse for its delectable truffle edamame dumplings or to Sofitel Mumbai for its five-star setting. Today, it is possible to spend an entire day here — one can catch up on a dose of art and culture at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, shop for high-end clothing, accessories and beauty brands at Jio World Drive and watch a movie at its rooftop drive-in theatre, drop by for a cup of coffee at the country’s first Pret-E-Manger (UK-based coffee and sandwich chain) and wind up with dinner and drinks at any of the numerous upscale bars and restaurants that have cropped up with in the premises, which is spread over 370 hectares.
BKC is home to some of the biggest names in the corporate world, such as the National Stock Exchange, Citibank, and the Reserve Bank of India. The area has emerged as a commercial hub in Mumbai, with several multinational companies setting up their offices in the locality. The demand for residential properties in the area has increased as a result of BKC’s growth as a commercial hub.
The presence of commercial establishments in BKC has led to the development of a robust social infrastructure. The locality has several restaurants, cafes, and shopping centres catering to the needs of the residents. It is also home to some of the best hotels in Mumbai, making it an ideal location for business travellers.
The demand for luxury homes in Mumbai has never been higher, and BKC stands tall as the crown jewel of this trend. These apartments offer a lifestyle that resonates with the city’s elite, providing a perfect balance of comfort and prestige.
Well keeping in mind that even though Delhi is rightfully the Capital of the Country, Mumbai does own her place not just as the commercial capital of the country, but also its’ entertainment capital. And hence, the need for a clear vision by the MMRDA (again – not a drug but the planning & development authority). So, this 900-acre wasteland was to become the next “growth centre” from the Central Business District (CBD) of South Mumbai, which was most saturated even back then. Major players from Real Estate, Banking & other commercial businesses, slowly started diverting toward this hub as it offered larger spaces, more room for employment opportunities from the suburbs, ease of travel…and so much more. So, what was once built, envisioned just to take pressure off Mumbai City, has been engineered to be the main CBD of the city and is likely to take over Nariman Point by 2030.
A peek inside this hub will open you to large commercial complexes housing some of the largest nationalized & international banks like BOI, SBI, ICICI, American Bank, Citibank, Standard Chartered, Etc. It’s close proximity to the International Airport but naturally magnetized the consulates of the USA, Australia, Belgium, France, Sweden, Hungry as well as the British Deputy High Commission. Other international companies too, such as Twitter India, Amazon.com, Spotify, Swiss Re, etc. decided to shift base to BKC. And so naturally, this complex had to provide opportunities for residential expansion as well…which gave rise to some of the top schools of the city like Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay & further gave rise to become an entertainment hub for social and cultural events such as exhibitions, concerts, religious and political rallies, etc. JIO World, Nita Ambani’s Cultural Centre, the MMRDA grounds, all own large, open & closed spaces for hosting huge events like the G20, Miss India, Filmfare Awards, and other such functions.

The ongoing Metro-3 project aims to alleviate some of these challenges, but concerns persist regarding traffic congestion and environmental impact.
