There are a lot of differences between my village and this city. But one thing that I can relate to in this city is the love for fried snacks. People here love to eat fried snacks, and one of the most famous snacks available here is the Kota kachori. This is the snack that many people even like to have in the morning here.
I was really amused when I saw how much people love kachori here. Even in the place where I live, many people like to have them as their breakfast. You can see stalls opened just for selling Poha and Kachori. One of my flatmates is in love with Kachori. She likes to have them in a snack with tea.
Every time the clock hits 5, the words from her mouth are, “Let’s have kachori.”
This is a kind of dedication that one needs to have for competitive exams. Alas, I don’t have this kind of dedication. Some of my friends say that it is not good to have a good friend in Kota, but he is the one with whom I like to eat kachori most of the time. He loves them too, and sometimes it looks like he loves them more than me. But I love the kachori time that we spent together as we also get to eat kachori from each other’s hands. Kachori is having some spices which are having medicinal values.
Well, I don’t know about the filling inside the kachori, but it is delicious, and when served with chutney, you can’t stop eating more and more. This is the reason I gained some weight in Kota. Although girls don’t like admitting their weight gain, I don’t admit in front of my boyfriend and boyfriend. But I know that I have gained weight, and Kachori is one of the sinners in this.
The good thing about Kachori is that it is always fried fresh and not like other snacks, which are kept for many days before serving to customers. There are different types of fillings inside it, and all of them taste awesome. It’s fresh and worth the waiting time in the stalls. Kachori is having some spices which are surprisingly medicinal value.
The only irritating thing about these is the small-small crumbling that gets attached to the teeth. I remember the moment when a lot of them got between my teeth, and my boyfriend just laughed out his lungs. Although he helped in removing those crumbs, I really got upset then. But you know he had to handle me, so he was forced to buy me chocolates.
That was a really great day. Talking more of kachori, I think it might be Rajasthan’s state snack as most of the people here bond over it. They like to talk about their daily lives having kachori the whole day. For most of the students in Kota, this is the golden time as the Kachori and Tea makes all the worries go away. You can find most of the students here in Kota enjoying Kachori during the evening, and they tend to spend even half-hour on the stalls.
To me, it is really amusing that a simple snack can get them out of their vicious study cycle. I call it vicious as they study like a robot. While I struggle completing my DPs and Sheets, they tend to do questions from the books like Irodov and HC Verma. Only snack time can get them out of this vicious circle of books and study materials.
In many hostels, you get snacks, and students there get to eat snacks at breakfast and at lunch. This happens once or twice a week, and I get really jealous of them because they don’t have to spend a penny on it. Also, they can enjoy this snack in the comfort of their cozy rooms. But then I think if this happens, then the kachori time of him and me would be interrupted.
So, I stop getting jealous and again start enjoying the time. I love it when he feeds the kachori from his hands. Although it gets awkward sometimes as people stare and pass comments sometimes, but still manageable.
Back in my village, we had many snacks, but I don’t think kachori was one of the themes. Although there was mathi that would be without any filling and wouldn’t be eaten with chutney, it didn’t taste as good as the one with filling.
I tell maa about this, sometimes urge her to try to make it so that I can eat when I reach home. She totally neglects it and then asks me about the studies, and this is the part which I hate most. Although I don’t want to tell her about the studies, she asks if getting a good rank is sure.
Which you know, isn’t.
So I just tackle this question.
In the series, Kota Factory I think they missed elaborating on the importance of Kota Kachori in a Kota’s student life. Although they mentioned it, they didn’t show many people consume it for daily purposes. Many households here make them at home, and they don’t buy it like us from the sweet shops and stalls.
Although there are many shops here explicitly dedicated to this kachori business, the kachori available in Mahaveer Nagar is regarded to be the best. This is due to the Chaurasiya Kachori. There is also a great shop in the chowk which is famous. Most of the people go to Mahaveer Nagar to grab one from Chaurasiya, and I personally go there sometimes.
Kachori is an emotion; here, it is not just a dish. Most of the people cannot get their day started here without Kachori. People have set up their businesses around it here, and I have seen people carrying them in Thelas in the morning. With Poha and Chai, they make a perfect breakfast and sometimes snack. For lovers like us, they are the perfect pocket-friendly snack that doesn’t empty our wallets.
The time I spent with him is the time that counts to me the most.
