Gurudongmar Lake – Where the Himalayas Touch the Sky

Gurudongmar Lake – Where the Himalayas Touch the Sky

There are places you visit… and then there are places that change something inside you. Gurudongmar Lake belongs to the second kind.

Located at a staggering altitude of 17,800 feet, Gurudongmar is not just one of the highest lakes in the world—it is a place where silence feels sacred, the air feels thinner, and nature feels overwhelming in the most humbling way.

Where is Gurudongmar Lake?

Gurudongmar Lake is situated in North Sikkim, close to the Indo–China (Tibet) border. It is about 190 km from Gangtok and is usually visited via Lachen, which serves as the base village.

Because of its sensitive border location, special permits are mandatory, and travel is allowed only through registered tour operators.

Why Gurudongmar Lake Is So Special

  •  One of the Highest Lakes on Earth
At nearly 18,000 feet, just standing here is an achievement. The lake remains partially frozen even in summer, creating surreal blue-and-white contrasts.

  • Sacred to Multiple Religions
Gurudongmar Lake is considered holy by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus.
According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava blessed the lake so that a part of it never freezes, allowing locals access to water even in extreme winters.

  • Unreal Colors & Landscape
The lake changes shades—from deep blue to turquoise—depending on sunlight, clouds, and snow. Surrounded by barren mountains, it feels like another planet.
