How to Become a Cricketer?

Malhar (Name changed) was son of maid working at one of my friend’s home in a remote and obscure dusty town asked me a question, “How to become a cricketer?”, while we were watching Indian Premier League in the year 2019 at my friends house. I was a casual match viewer on tv and I actually never was knowing, How to become a cricketer?. Our laughter in response to the question ” How to become a cricketer?” tranquillized his curiosity. But his dream never let him sleep. That time he was only 8 years old.

In June 2020, out of sudden curiosity I pinged my friend and during the course of conversation, I happened to ask about Malhar. I was surprised to know that he was playing with a locally made wooden bat and tennis ball hitting the bounced back ball from wall almost routinely for 8-10 hours in scorching sun.

Now I really became crazy to know, how to become a cricketer?. I contacted several coaches in Mumbai. visited Azad Maidan to Shivaji Park in Dadar.

On 27th March 2021, I called my friend to negotiate with mother of Malhar to work at my home in Andheri and bring Malhar for cricket training

He took admission in Pro-King Cricket at Kanjur Marg-East in Mumbai. In few days his mom became comfortable commuting in bus from my home to Kanjur Marg. It took upto Diwali, to learn the basic from a great teacher, Raju Ambre at Pro-King.

It was in these matches that he was eyed by one cricket coach from Mumbai Cricket Association

Cricket sites for local cricket

I continued watching game of Malhar on sites like, Chauka.in and cricheroes.in. Due to paucity of time, I could not go along with Malhar for whole day matches. Most of the time these matches were arranged at far off places like, Azad Maidan, Bhiwandi, Netaji Subhas Ground, Bhayandar-North Mumbai. Being a tea lover, I used to watch matches of Malhar, his bowling, his sixes, his singles and his fielding taking tea sips at Chai Tapri in Juhu Mumbai

I found several teams simultaneously playing, getting trained at Shivaji Park- Dadar, Azad Maidan, Cross Maidan, Oval Maidan, Seven Square school field at Mira Road, Vadape Cricket Ground, Gaondevi Cricket Ground and few matches at RSA Ground Airoli
